Tirzepatide for Weight Loss (Zepbound / Mounjaro) — Medical Weight Loss in Sikeston, MO & via Telemedicine

What is tirzepatide?

Tirzepatide is a once-weekly injectable medication — the first in a newer class that activates two gut hormone receptors instead of one: GLP-1 and GIP (glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide). This dual action is why it’s drawn so much attention. Brand names:

  • Zepbound — FDA-approved for chronic weight management (and for moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea in adults with obesity)
  • Mounjaro — FDA-approved for type 2 diabetes; widely prescribed off-label for weight loss

How does it work — and how is it different from semaglutide?

Like semaglutide, tirzepatide suppresses appetite, slows digestion, and improves blood sugar control. The added GIP receptor activity appears to enhance the effect: in head-to-head clinical trials, tirzepatide produced greater average weight loss than semaglutide — around 20% of body weight at the highest dose over 72 weeks, versus ~15% for semaglutide.

That doesn’t automatically make it the better choice for everyone. Tolerability, medical history, cost, and availability all factor in — which is why the decision belongs in a physician’s office, not a headline.

Who is a candidate?

Similar to other prescription weight-management medications, tirzepatide is generally considered for adults with:

  • BMI of 30 or higher, or
  • BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related condition (hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, sleep apnea)

It is not suitable for patients with a personal or family history of medullary thyroid carcinoma or MEN 2, and requires caution in patients with a history of pancreatitis or severe GI disease. Candidacy is determined through physician evaluation.

What to expect: dosing and timeline

  • Once-weekly injection at home with a prefilled pen.
  • Gradual titration: the dose starts low and steps up over weeks to months, guided by your tolerance and response.
  • Timeline: appetite reduction often begins early; substantial weight loss typically accrues over 4–8 months.
  • Long-term view: as with all anti-obesity medications, continued treatment is usually needed to maintain results.

Side effects

Most common are GI-related — nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, decreased appetite — typically strongest during dose increases and easing over time. The FDA labeling also carries a boxed warning regarding thyroid C-cell tumors seen in rodents, and notes risks of pancreatitis and gallbladder events. These are reviewed with you before starting and monitored during treatment.

Frequently asked questions

Is tirzepatide better than semaglutide?
In clinical trials it produced more average weight loss, but individual response varies. Some patients tolerate one better than the other. Your physician can help you weigh efficacy, side effects, and cost.

What’s the difference between Zepbound and Mounjaro?
Same active ingredient, different FDA approvals: Zepbound is labeled for weight management (and sleep apnea with obesity); Mounjaro is labeled for type 2 diabetes. Dosing and pens are essentially the same.

Will I need to take it forever?
Obesity is a chronic disease, and studies show weight regain after stopping GLP-1/GIP therapy. Most patients plan for long-term treatment with periodic reassessment.

Can I start via telemedicine?
Yes — Missouri and Illinois patients can complete evaluation and follow-ups virtually. The medication ships from the pharmacy; injections are done at home.

Does insurance cover Zepbound?
Sometimes, depending on your plan and diagnosis. Coverage for weight management alone is inconsistent. We offer self-pay options — contact us for current pricing.
